Chapter 13

Suede

While Doc Henry finished with the scene, Suede headed out of the trail with Graham and Jenn, who were going back into town. She had figured that Riley would be waiting by the Jeep, but when she got there, he was nowhere to be found.

“He couldn’t have gotten far,” said Graham, seeing her concern.

“His farm is just up the road.” Was he going back to his house without his truck, or would he get his brother to take him to the library to get it?

Her answer came a few minutes up the road, where Riley walked slowly back toward his house. Graham pulled the Jeep over. “Get in, man.”

Riley didn’t waste time arguing and got in the back with Suede. “I just left. I got sick of waiting.”

“You had me worried,” said Suede.

“Sorry, but I wasn’t sticking around to see your old man.”

“He’s not my old man. He’s my mother’s boyfriend. They never married.” She knew the dynamics didn’t matter too much. Everyone in town knew her connection to Ted Morrison. “And I said I don’t agree with him. He was a dick to you, and I’m sorry.”

Riley didn’t say anything. He turned and looked out the window.

“Let’s not get twisted out of shape over Ted,” said Graham. “I’m taking you back to your cars, and then I’m heading on to the lab with Doc when he goes in.”

“I want to go in with you,” said Jenn. “I know I’m a year behind you, but this is the perfect chance for me to get to know Dr. Henry before my internship.”

“I put in a good word for you,” said Graham. “But no, you’re not going.”

He didn’t give a reason why, but Suede guessed he didn’t want whatever they had between them—or didn’t as the case may be—to get in the way of his work. Graham liked to look professional, and Jenn hanging all over him wasn’t going to do either of them any favors.

The ride back to the library was quiet, and when Graham stopped the car, Jenn jumped out and beelined to her Ford Fiesta.

“Shit,” said Graham, who jumped out behind her. Suede was shocked he’d go after the girl.

She got out and followed Riley to his truck. “Hey, you should go with us.”

“Where?”

“I’m going to see if I can go with Graham.”

“No thanks,” he said coldly. “I’ve got shit I could be doing on the farm.”

“Okay. So, I’ll see you Tuesday?”

“Yeah, maybe. I’m not sure anymore.” He couldn’t even look her in the eyes, and she was so upset with Ted for his behavior.

“Come on. Don’t let Ted discourage you.” She might not be able to act on any of the attraction she had for him, or whatever that was against the tree, but that didn’t mean that he had to give up on his dreams because of his past.

“I’m not. But maybe I have some thinking to do.” He got into his truck and shut the door.

Suede backed away as he promptly fired up the engine and backed out to leave.
